Neural circuit dynamics for learned defensive (re)actions

Antoine Besnard, Institut de Génomique Fonctionnelle de Montpellier

Pavlovian defensive reactions such as cue-elicited freezing have been extensively studied in rodents, leading to in depth characterization of their neural correlates across distributed brain regions, neural circuits and cell types. Although the focus on defensive reactions has largely overshadowed defensive actions, recent conceptual and methodological advancements have re-energized the study of avoidance behavior. I will present some findings showing how the hippocampus and its downstream partner the lateral septum modulate learned defensive reactions and actions in rodents. The relevance to maladaptive defensive behaviors will also be discussed as neuroimaging studies in patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder point to the hippocampus as a critical site of vulnerability to stress.
