What makes us human?
Cortical memories of face identity
The face is the primary source of information for recognizing the identity of people around us, but the neural basis of this astonishing ability remains largely unknown. In this presentation, I will define the fundamental problem of face (identity) recognition, arguing that there is a specific expertise of our human species at this function, supported by a specific right lateralized neural network. I will then attempt to integrate observations from lesion studies, neuroimaging, human intracerebral recordings and stimulation to redefine the high-level visual system as a non-hierarchical set of memories in the temporal association cortex and to propose a coherent theoretical framework of the neural basis of human face recognition.
