Training working memory in older people: the role
of age and individual differences
In this presentation I will discuss the efficacy of working memory _-WM- training procedures for typically-aging older adults. I will focus on illustrating a procedure that appears to produce both near and far transfer effects – even in abilities needed in everyday tasks, such as reading comprehension and everyday problem solving – in different populations (young-old, old-old). I will then comment on the role of individual characteristics (such as age and baseline WM performance) and other crucial variables (i.e. the nature of the task) in predicting specific gains and transfer effects in the short and long term.
